I had an interesting experience the other night when I was having a bath in the small hours and discovered I couldn't turn the hot tap off. The broken washer actually emerged through the tap and fell into the bath ;-p

I eventually managed to get it screwed down far enough by brute force to avoid the bath's overflowing, but they're very old taps (possibly 1940s vintage) and the hot-water system in the building is chaotic; when the plumber eventually came, it turned out the place to turn off the hot water supply wasn't the stopcock I thought it was at all...
