Glancing at my tag list, I am reminded that I haven't yet mentioned that I gave a project speech at our Toastmasters meeting last week.

This is rather more significant than it should have been; we're supposed to let no more than a month or two go by between speeches, but I'd been putting it off for something in the vicinity of a year. (I can remember two separate attempts to draw an interesting speech out of the fact that my taxes, in defiance of cliche, are simple and painless. Which reminds me, I think there's a very small refund cheque around here somewhere that I haven't bothered to cash yet. But I digress.)

The topic I ended up doing my speech on was the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, since by one plausible definition that event occurred on the date on which the meeting was being held. The actual discovery, in the sense of somebody moving some dirt aside and going "Hey, this looks like the entrance to a tomb", occurred earlier in the month (on the date that would later become famous the world over as my birthday), but the 26th of November was the day they took their first look inside, and realised what a find they had on their hands.

The speech went well, which was a relief, and several people expressed a hope afterward that the club would be hearing from me more frequently in future. I believe I shall be able to oblige; my struggle, I think, was with the specific terms of this project, and I should be able to deal with the next one more easily. We shall see.
