people still go mad or have changes of heart because that's what the book says happens, but it's no longer quite clear why

That reminds me of all too much fan-fiction...

If you change/remove the original context then you are removing the reasons why the characters acted as they did in the first place, and things end up happening just Because the Author Said So, rather than because it would make any sense for anyone in that situation :-(
