If I didn't think it was eventually going to become a book about affirming your own values, flying in the face of social convention and denying mortality, it would have been a hard pass and not an "I have a feeling I'll get back to it at some point". At the moment, though, I'm still in the part where the author is establishing the obstacles that the hero will eventually triumph over, and I'm not in the right frame of mind for it.

I haven't missed the matched pair of Churchills, for what it's worth; they're introduced very early on. Though I haven't yet reached the point, if there is one, where the Major allows himself to get properly upset about the situation.
