Notes on a music collection, part 8
Apr. 22nd, 2026 08:28 pmAs Time Goes By, Henry Mancini. Instrumental cover. Could do with being either simpler or more complicated.
Ascot Gavotte, My Fair Lady Original Cast. Fun in context, not so interesting in isolation.
Ask Me No Questions, Bangles. A torch song, in a more restrained style than their usual (it's from their post-reunion album, Doll Revolution).
Ask Me Why, The Beatles. Another Beatles song that I'm not familiar with and don't mind not being familiar with.
Asuncion, Ennio Morricone. A brief instrumental from the soundtrack of The Mission.
At the End of the Day, Les Mis 10th Anniversary Concert. Another one that's powerful in context but I'm not so interested in as a standalone song.
At the Zoo, Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon in a whimsical mood. "The monkeys stand for honesty / Giraffes are insincere..."
The Attack on Rue Plumet, Les Mis 10th Anniversary Concert. Another one that doesn't work so well out of context.
Atto Di Dolore, Ennio Morricone. An instrumental from the soundtrack of a movie I haven't seen. Bouncy, but doesn't stand out as something I'd like to listen to often.
Audrey, Dave Brubeck. Instrumental. Paul Desmond leads on saxophone. I like it okay, but I don't really dig it.
The Aussie Bar-B-Q, Eric Bogle. Bogle's other tribute to a formative Australian experience. Parts of it haven't aged well, but the experience it describes is still recognisable.
Ave Maria, Gheorghe Zamfir. Schubert's Ave Maria, of course, the one that was also used in Fantasia.
Ave Maria Guarani, Ennio Morricone. From the soundtrack of The Mission. I don't know if this one is an adaptation of an existing setting or if Morricone came up with a new one for the occasion.
Ave verum corpus, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein). If I ever knew what the words meant, I've forgotten; but it sounds nice.
Away in a Manger, Choir of King's College Cambridge. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the boy-soprano-led style.
