. We had a weekend gaming session. We were missing one of the players for Ticket to Ride: Legacy, so instead we played Unfair and Pandemic: The Cure.

Unfair is a competitive game in which each player is attempting build a theme park by acquiring cards representing rides and other attractions, upgrades, and opportunities to do a rival theme park dirty. I enjoyed it and would like to play it again; on this first attempt, I made the mistake of chasing after the long-term goals and neglecting to build a solid foundation that would ensure I had the resources to achieve the goals.

Pandemic: The Cure is a variant of the co-operative game Pandemic, designed for faster play, with a smaller and much simpler board and none of the card decks (but more dice). We did very well for a while, but were wiped out by a string of disease outbreaks when we were close to winning, which is often how it goes with either version.

. I gave the regular weekly game session a miss, as I was feeling a bit unwell and I had paperwork to do. With all the running about I've been doing lately, it was nice to have a quiet evening to myself, even if part of it did have to be spent doing the prep work for this month's committee meeting.

. On Anzac Day, I happened to be awake in time to go to the dawn service, which I've never done before here; I usually wake up later and go to one of the mid-morning services. I'd never really thought about how many people were likely to go to the dawn service, but I think I'd assumed it would be about the same as the services I've been to, if not a bit smaller due to the early hour; in fact, the crowd was huge, at least as large as both later services put together. (How many people were motivated by genuine enthusiasm, and how many just wanted to get it over and get on with their day, I couldn't say; I will note that my own choice was partly motivated by the consideration that the service I would normally go to was on at the same time as Parkrun.) The choir's sound system was bad again this year, even allowing for the fact that I was away over on the far side of the vast crowd from their amps; the distance at least meant that whenever there was a horrendous feedback squeal the worst harmonics died out before it got to me.

. I've started listening to a new podcast, The Pod's the Thing. In each episode, a group of actors do a table read of an iconic scene from Shakespeare, pick it apart for vocabulary, contemporary context and character motivation, and then finish up by running through the scene again with the benefit of the discussion. One of the regulars is Felix Trench, who I know as a voice actor from Re: Dracula and The Beekeeper's Picnic; this is the first time I've heard him as himself, and I was amused to discover that his voice really does just sound like that.

. Randomly recommended by Youtube: someone who reacts to music videos of UK chart hits (and is not from the UK, judging by the accent) watches the music video for "The Wombling Song" with zero context.
