My determination not to be One Of Those People Who Never Finished War and Peace has paid off.

I'm afraid I still don't like it very much. I grant that it has excellent and authentic characterisation, but slice-of-life has never been my favourite genre and War and Peace is the entire multilayered cake of life.

It has, however, had the effect of making me want to read some good nonfiction about 1812. Anybody got suggestions?

They cover a wider period but look up "Wellington: The Iron Duke" and "Redcoat", both by Richard Holmes.

How about some good fiction?

I certainly enjoyed the first few books of Temeraire.
