An extended metaphor for NaNoWriMo came into my head this evening (and here, I will stretch it till it weeps):
It's sort of like sightseeing by competing in the Tour de France-- the cheering crowds, and the challenge to push my stamina to its limits, is thrilling, and exhilarating, and all that good stuff.
And although my preferred way to travel, better suited to my personality, is to pick one small town and sit at a crossroads, and chat with locals, and maybe become close friends to only a few of the people I meet, it is nonetheless the truth that I never even would have considered visiting France at all if it hadn't been for the challenge of entering the race.
