Dec. 18th, 2009 08:08 amNow that the hot water system is working again, I have been able to take my first hot shower in over a fortnight. It was an oddly disconcerting experience to begin with; the sensation of having comfortably warm water pouring on me was one that had become unfamiliar. It's one of those things a person picks up again very quickly, though.
(I should add, in case anybody's horrified by the thought of two weeks of cold showers at this time of year, that it's summer here; and I have friends who would have been happy to lend me their shower and hot water occasionally if I'd found the cold too much of a hardship.)
And a reason to count my blessings: When the gasfitter announced that part of the hot water system had worn out and would need to be replaced, my first reaction was relief. ("There actually is something wrong with it! It's not just that I'm incompetent to turn the darn thing on properly!") I am aware that there are people for whom the discovery of necessary and probably expensive repairs would be anything but relieving, and am appropriately thankful that I'm not one of them.
