Lyrics meme
Jun. 10th, 2024 03:50 pmI was feeling nostalgic about the old random lyric quiz meme, so I decided to give it another go.
The rules:
1. Open up your music player. Hit shuffle.
2. Record the first few lines of the first thirty pieces of music that come up, with the title, if it appears, redacted. Skip instrumentals, but don't skip the embarrassing ones.
3. Make hapless internet denizens guess the song names and artists. Google is cheating. For musical songs, the name of the musical is acceptable in place of the artist. Leeway is also given for traditional ballads, jazz standards, etc.
On this occasion, rather than going back to the music player (the contents of which haven't changed much since last time I did this), I instructed a popular streaming service to create a playlist based on my listening history.
I've skipped 3 tracks to avoid having two consecutive songs by the same artist, 2 instrumentals, and 1 song in French that I listened to once before and that even I wouldn't be able to recognise from the written lyrics.
Where a track had a spoken preamble, I've skipped that and quoted the first lines of the actual song.

Date: 2024-06-10 09:00 am (UTC)8. Dream A Little Dream of Me??
9. Both Sides Now
11. It Must Have Been Love
14. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
21. Morning Has Broken
I know 25 & 26 well, too, but I cannot quite get at them. I think I know 4 too.

Date: 2024-06-10 09:21 am (UTC)I'm going to offer you a chance to look at 9 again and see if you want to change your answer.
1 and 8 are both incorrect, but I can see how you got there.
I think you're probably right about knowing 4.

Date: 2024-06-10 09:36 am (UTC)Yeah, 8 was the one I was less sure of. I know it, and that was where singing it got me, but... evidently not to the right place.
9 is Both Sides Now, or From Both Sides Now! Is that not the title?? I cannot think what the title actually is, then, without looking.
Ohhhh. I mean, 10!!! lol. I couldn't understand why that was wrong. Ahem. Again, state of my brain this morning. I'm not great with numbers.
Oh, I know what 4 is now! But I am blanking on the title: it's only that super famous song about Buddy Holly dying that everybody knows, except my brain this morning, American something??? /o\ *cries*
26 might be I Wanna Dance With Somebody, but again, I'm not sure if I'm getting to the right chorus from singing the first two lines...

Date: 2024-06-10 09:50 am (UTC)I think in the circumstances I'm going to have to insist on the full title for 4.

Date: 2024-06-11 02:07 am (UTC)I would have said that 8 was "Dream a Little Dream" as well :-(
I think I may have heard 28 -- it's a rather different genre from the others if so... and in any case I have no idea of the title.
4 has already been identified as "American Pie".
I'm reasonably certain I've never heard any of the others!

Date: 2024-06-11 03:05 am (UTC)28 is rather different, and not something I think either of us would usually be interested in (the version on the playlist is a cover). That said, the original was all over the place for a while when it was new, so I wouldn't be surprised if you'd been exposed to it at some point, but probably not in circumstances where you'd have been interested in learning the title.

Date: 2024-06-23 08:28 am (UTC)I see you've posted the answers, but I'm going to have a go at this before I go look. Sadly, I can hear the lyrics (and then more) to #9, but I don't know what the title of the song is -- the best I can do is 'is it one of those Crowded House songs my school friends were obsessed with?'.
19 - I think is called 'Romeo and Juliet', I think by Dire Straits.
27 - Paul Simon, possibly 'Graceland'
and the others that I recognise someone else has already identified. There are a couple of others where I can put a tune to them, but not enough lyrics to get me to a title. In particular that last one, which I know I know!
