Hard Case Crime is a publishing imprint that does classic hardboiled detective novels in deliberately retro lurid covers. I've occasionally seen them about the place (mostly in supermarket discount bins, it has to be said), but not really paid a lot of attention; hardboiled is not my thing.

But I have discovered today that there is at least one book in the line-up that I'll be seriously tempted to buy every copy of that crosses my path:

On the grounds that it is "the first real hardboiled detective story", they've also published The Valley of Fear by "A. C. Doyle, Best-Selling Author of 'THE LOST WORLD'".

Yes, that Valley of Fear, that Doyle. (That Lost World.)

With a retro-pulp lurid cover that must be seen to be believed.

I saw that on tor.com, and thought it was a hilarious mockup. Then I read the article and realised it was for real.
