Somewhere in the course of working through the property condition checklist for the new house, I made the mental transition from "this is a place that I happen to be in" to "this is a place that is mine".

I may, however, not be alone in thinking of it that way:

While I was doing the backyard section of the checklist, I noticed a movement and realised there was a cat lying in the corner between the back and side fences. When she noticed I'd noticed her, she got up and disappeared through a gap in the fence. Her kittens, which I hadn't seen until then, got up and followed her, except for a couple of black kittens who sat in the gap and looked at me.

I finished up the checklist and went into the house to get my camera. When I came back, the two black kittens were still there (and there was a tabby kitten sitting just outside the fence, looking off in another direction with an unconcerned air that made me suspect it hadn't noticed I was back), so I took a few photos of them. While I was angling for a better shot of the tabby, I got too close or something and they went off through the gap.

As I was walking back to the house, I noticed another black cat lying under a bush watching me. It ran off when I got too close, along the path down the side of the house, toward the front gate. (And then, moments later, back again. There's a problem with the latch on the front gate, and it's been sitting open for who-knows-how-long - but yesterday I figured out how to get it to stay shut.) This cat didn't have any kittens with it, but under the bush was a neat cat-shaped space that was clearly the work of more than one lying-under-the-bush session.

It's possible I've frightened them off, but somehow I have a feeling I'll be seeing these felines again...
