Interesting: for my part I abandoned War and Peace (not consciously; I just left off somewhere quite early on) but raced through Uncle Tom's Cabin....

The key difference in my case is probably that I own War and Peace but Uncle Tom's Cabin had to go back to the library.

I'm not exactly racing through War and Peace, either: I pick it up once a month and read a couple of chapters, and then I put it down and forget about it for another month. If I weren't being scrupulously honest about making actual progress with each of the works I have logged as "in progress", I probably wouldn't pick it up even that often.
