First lines meme, via [livejournal.com profile] rolanni:

The idea is that you post a rundown of the first lines of all your in-progress work. Through a mystical process not unlike that by which the irritation of a grain of sand encourages an oyster to produce nacre, thus creating a pearl, this causes the universe to encourage growth and formation of a completed story.

The mystical process may be working already: some of the lines that follow had not yet been written when I began this post. (The works to which they attach were in progress, just in a non-linear fashion that had not yet intersected their beginnings.)

In alphabetical order:

"And art thou feeling better now?"

It was on days like this that she was most happy to be dead.

She listened carefully, brow furrowed slightly in concentration, as he sang the song; if all went well, she would never hear it again.

Standing in what was, despite the unfamiliar frondy plants growing in it, unmistakably a cultivated field, he took stock.

Susan was walking through the markets, on her way home, when the voice caught her ear.

The message from the Co-ordinator of Transport earned immediate points by beginning, "I imagine the last week has made you weary of hearing about your Grandfather."

Una thought she had only closed her eyes for a moment when she heard the familiar voice calling her name.

...and for two works that still don't have first lines, the earliest line I do have:

"If you've finished your homework, I need you to come and give me a hand with something..."

"My name thou knowest: who art thou?"
