What with several of the people on my friendslist and blogroll being always a week ahead of me, I failed to avoid learning about half a dozen things about Neil Gaiman's Doctor Who episode before I saw it. A title, a line of dialogue, a couple of screenshots, you know the sort of thing.

Not one of them, in context, meant what I expected it would.

(To be clear, this is a good thing.)

[Edit to add: Another good thing was that, after the meal various people including me had made of Neil's teaser about the "old friend with a new face", the episode itself explained what that really meant early on, so I could relax and enjoy the rest of the episode in peace. I once had the experience of reading a novel thinking I'd been spoiled for something unpleasant happening to the lead character; in fact, I'd misunderstood and nothing of the sort did happen, but I still spent the entire book waiting for it to happen and that was just as bad as if I'd been really spoiled. I'm glad that didn't happen here.]

I liked the early reveal too. I liked how it wasn't a story with a tricky idea that spent the whole episode leading up to the reveal. It was an episode with a tricky idea that they spent the episode examining.

I have to say, though, my favourite realisation (because it just goes to show what kind of Doctor Who fan Neil Gaiman must be) was that the episode was filmed in a quarry.
