Professor Quinn's ship was a trim blue small-crew freighter. The name, according to the computer at the docking gate, was Expression of Gratitude to the Capital City of My Homeland.

"Expression of Gratitude to the Capital City of My Homeland?" said Lyndy. "The name's larger than the ship is!"

"There's a story there," said Professor Quinn. "But I'm not going to tell you if you're going to be like that about it."

"Oh, go on," said Lyndy. "With a name like that, this is clearly a NaNoWriMo draft. Lengthy anecdotes are a cheap way to bump up the word count."

(I'm not doing NaNoWriMo this year. But if my brain is going to keep handing me ship names like that, maybe I should.)

LOL!! I love it!

(And, N.B.: sometimes lengthy anecdotes like that are the only way to bump up a word count....)

An extended metaphor for NaNoWriMo came into my head this evening (and here, I will stretch it till it weeps):

It's sort of like sightseeing by competing in the Tour de France-- the cheering crowds, and the challenge to push my stamina to its limits, is thrilling, and exhilarating, and all that good stuff.

And although my preferred way to travel, better suited to my personality, is to pick one small town and sit at a crossroads, and chat with locals, and maybe become close friends to only a few of the people I meet, it is nonetheless the truth that I never even would have considered visiting France at all if it hadn't been for the challenge of entering the race.

My immediate reaction was "Has he been reading Iain M Banks" lately? ;-)
