I wasn't sure whether to go into detail about the tinkering, but someone asked, so...

I haven't been taking proper systematic notes, so this is all from memory, and I may have overlooked something.

The two factors that sprang out at me about "away" vs "home" were:

1. Beds. My bed was old and saggy; to my recollection, places where I have stayed on holiday have all had firm bed bases (in some cases, this is a polite way of saying I slept on the floor). So, I got a new bed base. And a new mattress, while I was at it, because the old one was starting to poke me in places I'd rather not be poked.

2. Staying up until silly o'clock reading the internet. Not something I tend to do when I'm away, if only because I don't have the internet with me. This is something I'm still working on, but one thing I have done is to install f.lux, which is supposed to help with the computer monitor light messing with the body's sleep cycle. I have noticed that I'm less inclined to stay up as late, now - I'm more likely to go "Oh, I'm tired" and go to bed, instead of spending several more hours going "Oh, I'm tired, but first..." - but I don't know if that's specifically down to f.lux.

As previously mentioned, I now have a regular exercise routine, which starts each morning with a bike ride down to the park at the end of the street and back (with diversions to other points of interest according to mood and available time), thus beginning the day with sunlight and fresh air. I assume that's doing something.

(I hadn't actually specifically intended to start a morning exercise routine, but it popped into my head on the Monday morning when I was thinking "So I'm up early enough to do something before work, but what?" This is a case of fortune favouring the prepared mind: some time ago, having tried and failed to established a regular after-work exercise routine, I decided I should at least try for frequent irregular exercise, and started training myself to associate the thought "I don't know what to do just now" with the thought "How about a bike ride?")

Another home environment change that wasn't specifically aimed at my sleep patterns, but might be having an effect, is that I've started watching what I eat again. Just watching, not applying rigid restrictions, but even just watching does tend to lead to thoughts like "I should eat some more vegetables" and "That's probably enough deep-fried carbohydrates for one day". (Which, I admit, I don't always then follow with appropriate action. But I do sometimes.)

Re. food and sleep patterns: I found the Gremlin Rule ("Never feed after midnight!") to be quite useful as an adjunct to both...

I'd have liked going to the gym this morning for my own regular exercise, but it was either that or adding to my sleep shortage. (I'm not sure I have a sleep cycle, although I do tend to nod off between 6pm and 7pm.) Best wishes for your life changes!

Trying for earlier nights myself. In bed before midnight tonight, now just need to put the iPad away and try for sleep.
