Answers to the lyrics meme quiz.

It might have been fairer if I'd mentioned that, due to my music streaming habits, nearly everything on the playlist ended up being either a live-in-concert recording or a cover version (or a live-in-concert recording of a cover version), and that consequently a few of these aren't exactly the standard lyrics. Mostly, though, I figured that anybody who was going to recognise the song at all would still recognise a slight variation. We'll see if I was right...

1.
When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?
-- "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", originally Elton John, cover by Sara Bareilles
(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit)

2.
I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
-- "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", originally U2, cover by Playing for Change

3.
Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her
-- "Teenage Dirtbag", originally Wheatus, cover by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

4.
A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
-- "American Pie", Don McLean
(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit, [personal profile] igenlode)

5.
Talk to me softly
There's something in your eyes
-- "Don't Cry", originally Guns N' Roses, cover by Walk Off the Earth

6.
Talking away
I don't know what I'm to say
-- "Take On Me", originally a-ha, cover by Seven Handle Circus

7.
I think I've already lost you
I think you're already gone
-- "If You're Gone", Matchbox Twenty (album version)

8.
The moment I wake up
Before you put on your make-up
-- "I Say a Little Prayer", originally Dionne Warwick, cover by The Overtones
(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit)

The original is "I put on my make-up", of course. This particular cover showed up on the playlist because I'd listened it to it recently, partly out of curiosity about how it would be adapted for a male singer. It basically just changes a few pronouns in the same way as in the second line, which superficially is the least disruptive possible alteration, but I feel like it changes the whole vibe of the song because now it's about what two people are doing together instead of about what what person is doing by herself.

9.
I will come for you at night time
I will raise you from your sleep
-- "Throw Your Arms Around Me", Hunters & Collectors (Sound Relief live version)

10.
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air

(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit)

11.

Leave the winter on the ground
-- "It Must Have Been Love", originally Roxette, cover by Andie Case & Alex Goot
(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit)

12.
In my eyes, indisposed
In disguises no one knows
-- "Black Hole Sun", originally Soundgarden, cover by Norah Jones

13.
There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed if I just listened to it right outside the window
-- "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", originally Pandora's Box, cover by Meat Loaf and Marion Raven

14.
Come home in the morning light
My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right?"
-- "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", originally Cyndi Lauper, cover by Haley Klinkhammer
(identified by [personal profile] thisbluespirit)

15.
Meet me down by the jetty landing
Where the scientists all say
-- "Reckless", originally Australian Crawl, cover by Angie McMahon

Of all the covers on the playlist, this is the one that changes the lyrics most substantially (I think the first line and the chorus are the only bits that are the same as the original). Even so, the first two lines track closely enough that I thought it might still ring a bell with anybody who would have recognised the original lyrics.

16.
Who's the black private dick who's a hit with all the chicks?
[WORD FROM TITLE]
-- "Theme from Shaft", originally Isaac Hayes, cover by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
(identified by [personal profile] igenlode)

-- "Psycho Killer", originally Talking Heads, cover by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

19.
A lovestruck Romeo
Got a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
-- "Romeo and Juliet", Dire Straits (On the Night live version)

20.

Watching the world go by
-- "When the River Runs Dry", Hunters & Collectors (Sound Relief live version)

21.

This cover is on the playlist specifically because I was introduced to it by one of the comments last time I had "Morning Has Broken" on the lyrics quiz meme.

22.
A poor boy
Whose story's seldom told
Squanders his resistance
-- "The Boxer", Paul Simon (Concert in Hyde Park live version)

23.
These mist-covered mountains
Are home now for me
-- "Brothers in Arms", Dire Straits (On the Night live version)

24.
If you
If you could return
Don't let it burn
-- "Linger", originally The Cranberries, cover by The Sidekicks

25.
It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair

There are so many here I should have recognised! I listened to so many of them on repeat (sometimes voluntarily. sometimes not. I had a parent who played the Graceland album on repeat until they knew it)
