I've been working through Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books -- trying to keep it more or less in order despite the various batches of copies being miles apart, but the fact that the first one I came across was about book twelve in the series does rather (for example) remove the tension from Thomas Raith's first appearance as a possibly-unreliable ally...
