It's been a busy night in the Kingdom of Loathing.

I'd been kind of stuck for a while, wandering through the same old places, not finding anything new, and not getting anywhere in my quests. (By the way, have I mentioned I finished the birthday candle quest? Entirely by accident, as it happened, I stumbled into the right place at the right time - although once it had happened, I could recognise the clues that would have led a more alert person to the same conclusion deliberately.)

So I was grousing about this to [livejournal.com profile] leecetheartist, and she pointed out an avenue of enquiry that I'd forgotten about. That let me finish one of my quests, and that opened up a whole new area to explore - and, in exploring it, I opened up another new area.

So, tonight I've fought bulls with boxing gloves, bought remarkable quantities of rather dubious chewing gum, visited tropical islands, and encountered drunken orcs - not to mention the Obligatory Pirate Cove, which I've had a lot of fun exploring; I've encountered three parodies of Captain Hook already, not to mention all the other famous pirates. (The Dread Pirate Bob, sadly, turns out to be a bit of jerk. But it must be admitted that, unlike many pirates, he does speak with an English accent.)

Oh, and there seems to be a haunted sombrero following me around...

I've been aware of Kingdom of Loathing for a while, and kept telling myself that I should try it out some time. "Some time" turned out to be last night, and I now have a Level 2 pastamancer, a familiar named Gorgo, and a tent of my own with a certificate hanging in it announcing that I've completed the Toot Oriole Quest.

Also a birthday cake somebody gave me and asked me to help them light: apparently, it's got those special trick candles that relight themselves when they're blown out, but they need some kind of magical fire to get them lit to start with. (I wonder, if I manage to find the magical fire and return the cake, if I will later be approached by somebody seeking my help in getting their birthday candles to go out...)

My favourite of the various adventuring locations I've visited so far is the Spooky Forest, in which lurk various spooky monsters such as wolfmen, vampires (which, if you catch them at the right moment, can be persuaded to grant you an interview instead of attacking you), triffids, and bars (as in "kilt him a bar when he wuz only three"). There's also, if you wander through it long enough, a spooky giant monolith with a map inscribed on it ("Chiseled into it is what appears to be a map leading to a giant X. You get excited about the prospect of seeing the world's largest X, but then notice the legend at the bottom...") - which incidentally has the power of making anybody who approaches it feel a sudden urge to find a monkey and hit it with a bone.

Eventually, I decided to have one last Adventure and pack it in for the night. My last Adventure turned out to be an encounter with a Singing Tree, which sang a happy song that got me dancing and put a spring in my step. Which was a nice note to end on.
